Der Autor erzhlt seine einfache und schnrkellose Lebensgeschichte, die ihn als Angehrigen eines kniglich westflischen InfanterieRegiments nach Spanien und schlielich als Wachtmeister einer so genannten Artilleriekompanie mit Napoleon nach Russland fhrt. Er berlebt diesen Feldzug, berlebt den so verlustreichen Rckzug der Trmmer der Groen Armee und kehrt endlich aus russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft in seine nunmehr gnzlich vernderte Heimat zurck.
