La conducta perturbada es vista como una reaccin comunicacional ante una situacin que tiene determinadas propiedades, y no como una enfermedad localizada en la mente del individuo. Se discute tambin la famosa teora del doble vnculo sobre la esquizofrenia, y se ejemplifica la situacin contradictoria que caracteriza al doble vnculo en unas variadas situaciones interpersonales, incluida la psicoterapia. En el ltimo captulo se establece una comparacin entre la teora de la comunicacin y el punto de vista existencial.
