Product Description Troubled by the events around her, Becky Makowiecki, a Jewish girl living in Canada in 1962, prepares to save her family as her mother once escaped from the dangers in Europe, a period about which her father will not speak. From School Library Journal Grade 68 An illconceived story with an unclear focus. Historical information is introduced in a heavyhanded way, interrupting the flow of the tale. Set in Toronto in 1962, the novel follows Becky Makowiecki as she tries to cope with the scary times in which she lives. The daughter of Holocaust survivors from Poland who emigrated to Canada, she is concerned about world events. Clumsy segues lead to her mother's reminiscences, and while many important issues are brought up, the thread holding them together is weak. Becky's friend Linda is learning disabled and taunted at school by students and by an insensitive teacher who is the stereotypical autocrat. Bullies turn out to be abused by their fathers. After learning about the Cuban Missile Crisis, Becky and Linda decide to build bomb shelters at their homes. When Becky's father discovers what she has been doing, he lashes out in anger and slaps her across the face. Readers learn later that seeing her digging has triggered a horrific memory for him. Becky stops talking to him, which leads to arguments between her parents. Finally, she runs away from home, survives a dangerous encounter with a stranger, meets a wise old man, and is miraculously rescued by her mother. The contrived story and stock characters make this a disappointing selection. Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.
