Los corales ptreos son animales marinos que forman un esqueleto de carbonato de calcio y viven en simbiosis con microalgas fotosintticas. En consecuencia, la luz juega un papel fundamental en esta simbiosis y en la supervivencia del coral. En este libro se presentan estudios de la interaccin de luz con la estructura del coral, prestando especial atencin a las consecuencias del esparcimiento mltiple en el ambiente lumnico en el que viven las algas simbiticas. Para ello, se propone un modelo fsico simplificado de un coral y se describe la caracterizacin ptica de sus componentes. El estudio est basado en simulaciones tipo Monte Carlo de la interaccin de luz con el modelo propuesto. Los resultados muestran que el campo local de luz en las cavidades del esqueleto es ligeramente mayor, que aquel que veran las algas fuera de la estructura. No obstante, si el coral pierde pigmentacin, el ambiente local de luz puede ser mayor al externo. Esto conduce a una situacin de estrs lumnico, e incluso dao permanente a las clulas fotosintticas. Los resultados son importantes para mejorar nuestra comprensin de la dinmica del fenmeno conocido como blanquemiento de corales".
