El medio marino ocupa las partes de la superficie terrestre y en zonas costeras entra en relacin con el hombre directamente por razones laborales y/o deportivas o indirectamente por la manipulacin y/o por el consumo de productos del mar. Se obtuvo un listado de 73 establecimientos especializados en la venta de alimentos marinos para consumo humano. El nmero de alimentos marinos en dichos establecimientos fue 390. Para la homogeneizacin y el enriquecimiento (muestras), as como para el aislamiento y la identificacin (12 especies estudiadas) se procedi segn la metodologa descrita en la octava edicin del Bacteriological Analytical Manual (FDA). En 29, 20, 34, 32, 10, 23, 20, 20, 12, 13 y 14 muestras se aisl un nmero igual de cepas cuyas caractersticas bioqumicas correspondieron a 11 de las 12 especies estudiadas. Las prevalencias globales obtenidas en alimentos marinos C, MSC, PCCC y CCCC fueron 38.59%, 25.00%, 31.17% y 28.57%. Se concluye que los alimentos marinos C, MSC, PCCC y CCCC representan factores de riesgo por 11 de las 12 especies estudiadas para el desarrollo de gastroenteritis aguda, infeccin de herida, infeccin de odo y septicemias primaria y secundaria.
