El hueso es un tejido conectivo mineralizado. Adems de la funcin mecnica de brindar soporte y proteccin, los huesos son una reserva esencial de calcio y fosforo para el organismo y tienen un papel importante en la produccin de glbulos blancos y rojos. El tejido seo tiene la capacidad de reparase por s mismo, sin embargo, si la extensin del dao es excesiva el hueso no se puede regenerar teniendo como resultado la prdida de sus funciones. En el presente trabajo se proponen las espumas inyectables de hidroxiapatita para promover la regeneracin sea. Estas espumas se obtienen a temperatura ambiente a travs del espumado de un cemento de fosfato de calcio. A lo largo de este libro se estudian diferentes agentes espumantes, se cuantifica la porosidad incorporada por el espumado, se muestra que las espumas mantienen la porosidad y son capaces de endurecer despus de ser inyectadas. Asimismo, soportan la proliferacin y la diferenciacin de clulas seas y permiten el crecimiento de hueso nuevo al mismo tiempo que se reabsorben. Consecuentemente las espumas de hidroxiapatita representan un avance sustancial en el desarrollo de nuevos materiales para regenerar lesiones seas.
