La Chinantla es, por extensin, la tercera selva ms importante de Mxico. Se ubica al norte del estado de Oaxaca, en la cuenca del ro Papaloapan. A pesar de la cantidad de recursos naturales que alberga, su poblacin, conformada en su mayora por indgenas chinantecos, vive en niveles de marginacin muy altos. En primera instancia, en este trabajo se presenta un anlisis de la crisis agrcola en las localidades de Valle Nacional, municipio ubicado en el corazn de la Chinantla. Posteriormente se evala la factibilidad del procesamiento de Chamaedorea Tepejilote como una alternativa productiva para las familias de una comunidad de dicho municipio. El estudio de factibilidad se enfoca en los siguientes aspectos: mercado, tcnico, tecnolgico y financiero. Esta publicacin es el resultado de la investigacin aplicada para la evaluacin de alternativas de desarrollo rural. Se realiza en el marco de un proyecto multudisciplinario dirigido por la Doctora Ana Paula de Teresa Ochoa, profesorainvestigadora de de la Universidad Autnoma Metropolitana (UAM).
