En la pesquisa en la historia tout court y en la que se dedica a los estudios de ciencia, el objetivo es hablar de las cosas que efectivamente ocurren en el mundo. El realismo es una condicin natural y deseable de estas pesquisas. Todava, hoy, en las ciencias sociales, hay una amenaza a todo realismo: el relativismo. La ofensa promovida por el relativismo incomoda tanto a los practicantes de la actividad cientfica,los cientficos, como a los historiadores. En ambos casos hay una polmica sobre la oposicin realismo versus relativismo. Cmo vencer el desafio puesto por el relativismo ante las empresas con pretensiones realistas en sus respectivos conocimientos? Es posible conciliar alguna forma de realismo con los avances comprensivos relativistas trados por los estudios sociolgicos? Cmo escapar del transtorno cognitivo de esos relativismos? Supongo que las dificultades que ocurren, en ciencia y en historia, son debidas a no considerarse ni las agencias materiales ni las significaciones que los sujetos hacen de los objetos. Propongo que se considere la agencia de las cosas y del lenguaje como accin efectiva, material y simblica, en la interaccin entre sujetos y objetos.
