Existen mltiples teoras y modelos para estudiar el funcionamiento familiar, sin embargo, los investigadores ms clsicos confirman la falta de estudios que no privilegien a los informantes clave, que superen las limitaciones positivistas y que busquen la exploracin familiar en el contexto del grupo humano como unidad de anlisis. Particularmente en la Psicologa, y especialmente en Cuba, el material metodolgico publicado, de orientacin cualitativa, es escaso y no existe un consenso acadmico implcito sobre dicha estrategia. Este hecho sera una alternativa esperada y necesaria. El texto propone un enfoque metodolgico cualitativo en la exploracin del funcionamiento familiar, a punto de partida de la influencia de la familia en el desarrollo armnico de las relaciones sociales de los nios en edad escolar, con resultados concretos de investigacin realizada en una comunidad con riesgos socioambientales y de un estudio de caso en la enfermedad Xerodermia Pigmentosa (XP), devastadora en el plano personal y en la dinmica familiar, apareciendo la necesidad de reajuste psicolgico y relacional, que equilibre las nuevas demandas con las capacidades del propio sistema familiar.
