L'Autre Monde est le rcit d'un double voyage dans l'espace vers Les tats et Empires de la Lune et vers Les tats et Empires du Soleil. Il est en cela le roman du monde tel que la nouvelle science et l'astronomie naissante permettent de l'imaginer, infini et habit, et o la Terre n'est qu'une plante parmi les autres.Mais malgr l'ingniosit des machinesvoler et la forte prsence de la science, ce n'est pas un roman de sciencefiction. Le voyageur doit lhaut affronter des peuples et des socits dont les vrits chahutent les certitudes de l'humanit terrestre et chrtienne. Le voyage dans l'espace devient voyage dans le temps, chacun des personnages rencontrs incarnant successivement un des aiscours qui se sont tenus sur l'origine et sur 'nature des choses' : des prsocratiques Gassendi, des rcits fabuleux Descartes. Si peu hroque que paraisse le personnage principal, il est donc l'acteur d'une aventure intellectuelle mais qui a ses moments de comdie et de posie, venant interrompre parfois la tension ne de l'audace d'un texte qui proclame la faillite des modles et la dbcle des dogmes.
