Ethnizitiit wird aber auch zu einer Mobilisierungsressource in der Konkurrenz urn die Durchsetz g von Interessen gegeniiber dem Sozialstaat und, wo sie auf politische Strukturen driingt, zur Basis eines neuen Nationalismus, der wechselweise Mehrheit und Minderheiten erfassen kann. Die in der viel berufenen 'multikulturellen Gesell schaft' auszutragenden Konflikte losen sich von ihrer materiellen Basis, verselb stiindigen sich zu fundamentalistischen Kulturkonflikten und werden dabei zuse hends unlOsbar. 1m Proze6 der ideologischen Sinnstiftung spielten traditionell Intellektuelle und spielen heute die modernen Sozialwissenschaften im Verein mit den Medien eine wichtige Rolle. Erst die Deutung von Erscheinungen lii6t diese zu einer Wirklich keit werden, die das Handeln im sozialen Proze6 bestimmt. Der vorliegt: nde Band faSt die Ergebnisse einer Arbeitsgemeinschaft zusammen, die im September 1987 im Zentrum ffir interdiszipliniire Forschung der Universitiit Bielefeld stattfand und sich die Aufgabe gestellt hatte, den Beitrag der Wissenschaften zur Konstruk tion ethnischer Minderheiten zu analysieren und die sich daraus auf das Handeln ergebenden Wirkungen zu bestimmen.
