Das Herzstck solcher Steuerungskonzepte sind Kennzahlen, die als Messinstrument und Erfolgskontrolle unternehmerischer Entscheidungen fundieren. Diese Gruppe von Kennzahlen1 hat gegenber herkmmlich verwendeter Erfolgsmae, wie zum Beispiel den EBIT (Earnings Before Interest und Taxes), Umsatzrendite oder Jahresberschuss den Vorteil, dass sie die Verzinsungsansprche der Eigenkapitalgeber mit bercksichtigen. Ohne diese Bercksichtigung wird implizit die Annahme gesetzt, dass das Eigenkapital kostenfrei zur Verfgung steht. Die Folgen knnten sein, dass Investitionen mit zu niedriger Rentabilitt gettigt werden und dass die Erfolgsvorgaben fr das Management zu niedrig ausfallen. Wertorientierte Unternehmensfhrung ist somit eine Ausrichtung auf die Interessen der Shareholder (Anteilseigner). Durch die Globalisierung und der dadurch zunehmende Wettbewerb auf den Kapitalmrkten wird es fr das Management immer wichtiger den Fokus auf Wertmaximierung und nicht nur auf Gewinnmaximierung zu legen, um den Anforderung von Investoren Genge zu leisten. Eine sehr verbreitete wertorientierte Kennzahl ist der Economic Value Added (EVA). Bereits im Jahr 2000 haben 36 Prozent der DAX100Unternehmen, die wertorientierte Kennzahlen implementiert haben, den EVA als Spitzenkennzahl ausgewhlt. Dieser Vormarsch der EVAKennzahl wird damit begrndet, dass sie eine enge Anbindung zum betrieblichen Rechungswesen hat und daher leicht verstndlich und kommunizierbar ist.
