La presente investigacin, ubicada en el contexto metodolgico del ordenamiento ambiental, aborda el tema de la gestin de residuos slidos urbanos en la Ciudad de Sancti Spritus, Cuba, con nfasis en su disposicin final. Previa caracterizacin fsico geogrfica y socioeconmica del rea de estudio, se hace un diagnstico de los elementos funcionales del sistema actual de gestin de residuos slidos y se analiza una alternativa para el tratamiento y disposicin de los mismos, consistente en el empleo de rellenos sanitarios manuales vinculados a diferentes zonas de la ciudad. Posteriormente se valida un procedimiento en el que se evalan los potenciales del entorno para la ubicacin de rellenos sanitarios mediante la valoracin de factores ambientales, tcnicos y sociales sobre la base de unidades ambientales (paisajes), obtenindose as una clasificacin de su grado de aptitud para tales propsitos.
