La lengua indgena baniwa perteneciente a la familia lingstica Arahuaca se encuentra seriamente amenazada de extincin. Sus pocos hablantes casi nunca la emplean prefiriendo utilizar el castellano en su vida diaria. Este trabajo presenta una investigacin realizada en Maroa y Puerto Ayacucho entre los aos 2008 y 2009, cuyo objetivo fue identificar y evaluar algunos mecanismos y factores que estn propiciando el desuso del baniwa como lengua materna y proponer algunas estrategias para revertir esta tendencia. Con base en los criterios propuestos por la UNESCO en el ao 2003 para evaluar el grado de vitalidad y amenaza de las lenguas, se identificaron factores como los contextos de uso, las actitudes de los hablantes, el grado de transmisin intergeneracional, la documentacin existente, entre otros, a travs de la observacin participante, encuestas, entrevistas e investigacin documental, para intentar apreciar el grado de vitalidad del baniwa y sus posibilidades de mantenimiento en el futuro.
