Desde la segunda mitad del siglo veinte, los Estados han experimentado procesos de expansin y contraccin en su compromiso ciudadano, siendo las polticas sociales una de las expresiones ms sensibles de los efectos estructurales y de las articulaciones instituciones entre estado, economa y familia. Esos procesos han abierto un enriquecedor debate acerca de los alcances y objetivos de las actuales polticas sociales y de su rol en la provisin del bienestar social. En su evolucin poltica y econmica, el caso de Chile alberga en menos de cincuenta aos dos modelos de desarrollo opuestos que han modificado el compromiso del Estado de asegurar unas condiciones mnimas de vida, entendidas como derechos sociales: el primero, de tipo keynesiano y el segundo, basado en el neoliberalismo econmico. Desde una interpretacin diacrnica, procesual y evolutiva de las polticas dirigidas a las mujeres se exponen los alcances y limitaciones de los tipos de regmenes polticos, modelos econmicos y proyectos de sociedad sobre los cuales se han elaborado esas polticas, explicndose el tipo de nocin de bienestar ha sobrevivido y las razones que se esbozan para su legitimacin.
