The purpose of this study is to examine programming techniques incorporating evolutionary strategies. It has been proposed that evolutionary strategies may provide alternative programming paradigms for finding solutions to problems of polynomial or NPcomplete complexity. As a demonstration of how some of these techniques may be implemented, an application incorporating a genetic algorithm is developed with the goal of finding an aesthetically pleasing layout for an entity relationship diagram.
