Son mayormente transcripciones de los interrogatorios a que fueron sometidos los participantes en la llamada Conspiracin de Aponte. Dicha conspiracin reuni en 1812 por primera vez a hombres de diversas razas y etnias africanas. En consecuencia fue el primer intento por abolir la esclavitud en Cuba. El negro liberto cubano Aponte, fue finalmente ejecutado, al descubrirse su liderazgo en la conspiracin. Tras ser encarcelados a los conspiradores, el libro se perdi entre los legajos de los archivos coloniales y nunca ms ha sido visto. Se tiene solo una idea de cmo era a partir de las descripciones y las preguntas y respuestas aqu reunidas. El Expediente sobre Jos Antonio Aponte estaba compuesto de imgenes y citas en los que se pretenda narrar una historia dignificada de la raza negra. Por lo que se describe en este expediente, el Libro de Pinturas es casi un libro de maravillas, una mezcla de ideogramas, emblemas y citas en un relato histrico y mtico.
