La exposicin a monxido de carbono en los espacios cerrados se ha constituido, como una de las causas de intoxicacin fatal en nuestra sociedad. Esta situacin se ha hecho ms frecuente en habitantes de departamentos. Las caractersticas de stos y probablemente el desconocimiento de sus habitantes han sido determinantes en la mayora de los casos reportados. Con el propsito de identificar estos factores de riesgo, se dise un estudio de transversal en una muestra de departamentos en Santiago Chile, septiembrediciembre 2003. El objetivo fue caracterizar el riesgo de la poblacin a la exposicin a CO. Se consider estadsticas descriptivas y diferentes modelos de regresin uni y multivariada. En conclusin se determin que los individuos con mayor riesgo a exposicin por CO son los adultos mayores ya que permanecen en espacios cerrados la mayor parte del tiempo. La fuente ms significativa de exposicin a CO fue el humo de tabaco, el cual a su vez estuvo altamente correlacionado con los niveles de COHb determinados indirectamente a travs de aire exhalado. A pesar del nivel de educacin se desconoce la relevancia del problema en salud pblica.
