El objetivo del presente texto es mostrar los resultados recientes en cuanto al estudio de una fisiopatologa que tiene gran relevancia como es la diabetes mellitus. Se utiliz un modelo experimental de diabetes mellitus en ratas para determinar si esta patologa tiene efecto sobre la expresin de receptores serotoninrgicos en el tejido cerebral y en el tejido gustativo perifrico como es la papila caliciforme en donde se ha mostrado que existe un sistema serotoninrgico inherente al epitelio lingual. Los resultados muestran que efectivamente en la Diabetes Mellitus existe alteracin en la expresin de estos receptores, lo cual puede explicarnos algunos de los cambios en la percepcin gustativa referida por pacientes con Diabetes Mellitus por ejemplo para la percepcin de la modalidad gustativa del sabor dulce, lo cual puede abrir un panorama para estudios posteriores sobre tratamiento de los efectos de la hiperglicemia sobre los diferentes rganos.
