This Dover volume brings into general circulation for the first time a rare edition of Aesops Fables issued in Paris in 1931 and limited to only 665 copies. The book combines the 1692 translation of the Fables by English journalist Sir Roger LEstrange with 50 drawings created especially as illustration for the tales by American sculptor, painter, and illustrator Alexander Calder.LEstranges 17thcentury rendering of the fables is a delight to read, judged by The Cambridge History of English Literature the best that we have. Calders art needs no special introduction: his widely displayed mobiles and stabiles have won him international popularity. The drawings Calder executed for this book rank among his most imaginative creations. Two hundred and one of the traditional fables are narrated here, including such alltime favorites as A Hare and a Tortoise, A Fox and Grapes, A Lyoness and a Fox, A City Mouse and a Country Mouse, A Swallow and a Crow, and A Fox and a Raven. An entertaining volume for general readers, prized by literature students and art lovers alike, this is a book that should appeal to practically everybody.

I wanted to like this book so much because of the art, but the binding was poor and some pages came loose after a few readings. The stories themselves are classic and enjoyable, but the quality of the book could definitely be better.

Some print quality issues
While I love the content of Sir Roger Lestrange's version, I noticed some pages had a bit of smudging in the print. The drawings by Calder are still delightful, but it was a bit disappointing to see those imperfections. Still, it’s a great collection overall!

Beautiful illustrations enhance the stories
I bought this edition of Aesop's Fables for my niece, and she adores it! The fifty illustrations by Calder add so much charm to the tales. It’s a lovely hardcover that feels sturdy and well-made, perfect for little hands to flip through.
