From Booklist This books introduction explains its rationale for providing selected geographic, economic, cultural, and social information on each of the ten provinces and two territories of Canada in terms of "a dearth of handy information" about the provinces and territories, compared with the number of sources on Canada as a whole. A brief section of basic background information on Canada precedes the display of similar information for each province (Alberta to Saskatchewan), the Northwest Territories, and the Yukon Territory. Each chapter begins with two line drawings: one of the provincial or territorial coat of arms; the other, a locator map of the province or territory on a map of Canada. An introductory section has information on such matters as the derivation of the provincial or territorial name, a description of the flag and coat of arms, the motto, emblems, official language(s), the capital city's history, and holidays. Then follow 12 topics, many with subsections, including finances, culture and education, motor vehicle use, "first, biggest, and best," organizations to write to for more information, and books about the province or territory. For example, "Parks and Historic Sites" is divided into three categoriesnational parks in the province or territory, provincial or territorial parks, and major national historic sites. "Government and Politics" includes the names and terms of lieutenant governors; names, party, and terms of premiers; a brief overview of the Legislative Assembly (members not named); and government departments (with generalinformation telephone numbers only). To her credit, the compiler, a Canadian librarianauthorresearcher, has assembled much useful information. However, one will need to consult other sources for such topics as ethnicity, mass media (e.g., newspapers, periodicals, radio and TV broadcasting), social services, and law and public safety. School, public, and academic libraries may profitably supplement Facts about Canada with general encyclopedias, the Canadian Encyclopedia, Facts On File's Canada (1993), and Statistics Canada's Canada Year Book. Product Description Provides information about Canadian culture, education, demography, government, politics, finances, and economy, including chronologies and a recommended reading list
