Perrault (1628 1703) was among the first writers to bring magical children's stories into the literary mainstream, proving to his original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thoughtprovoking. Clarke was an Irish stainedglass artist and book illustrator and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His drawings were inspired by the Art Nouveax style so typical of this period and his sinuous lines combined with delicate colouring earned him a reputation as a preeminent illustrator of the 'Golden Age.' Presented alongside the text, Clarke's enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance Perrault's magical storytelling making this a book to be enjoyed and appreciated, by both young and old alike.
