In the first book, the animals must work together to save the fieldmice's home from demolition by the combine harvester. When Mrs. Fieldmouse comes running for help, Tam, the dog, gathers a few friends. Forming a pyramid that's higher than the field of wheat, they alert Farmer George just in time. There are two minor problems: the text says, "he filled his flask with orange," leaving readers to wonder what happened to the rest of the sentence. Later, it reads, "the combine sliced a great swathe of corn"hard to do in a wheat field. In the second title, Clarrie the chicken loses one of her chicks. With Farmer George's help, they search everywhere to no avail. Finally, in a conclusion that is sure to get some laughs, the missing chick is found under the farmer's hat, fast asleep on his head. The suspense in both titles is minimal yet effective. The animals talk among themselves but use only yaps and clucks to communicate with the understanding farmer. The watercolor illustrations are clear and appealing. Fullpage farm scenes are interspersed with closeup vignettes of the barnyard denizens.
