Jeder dieser fnf Akte verfgt ber eine relativ geschlossene Handlung. Erst der Bezug auf die gesamte Tragdie stellt einen Sinnzusammenhang her. Der 2. Akt erhlt seine selbststndige Handlung durch die Figur des Homunkulus und die klassische Walpurgisnacht, welche ein in sich geschlossener Vorgang ist. Die hauptschliche Funktion des 2. Akts ist die Hinfhrung der Handlung und der Figuren zum folgenden HelenaAkt, dem Kernstck des Dramas. So stellt der 2. Akt die Verbindung her zwischen der Beschwrung der Helena im ersten, bei der Faust die erste Schau ihrer Schnheit erlebt [...], die aber in der Katastrophe endet, und seiner Vereinigung mit ihr im dritten [...].' Gegliedert wird der 2. Akt durch die drei unterschiedlichen Wege, die Faust, Homunkulus und Mephistopheles durch die Klassische Walpurgisnacht nehmen. Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf Mephistopheles und seine Erlebnisse innerhalb der Klassischen Walpurgisnacht, die schlielich zu einer Verwandlung des Teufels fhren, die anders als bei Faust und Homunkulus jedoch nur oberflchlich bleibt und keine echte Metamorphose darstellt. ich werde versuchen, der art dieser Verwandlung genauer auf den Grund zu gehen. Die Rolle des Mephistopheles im 2. Akt erscheint daher besonders wichtig, weil er seinem Prinzip der Verneinung (Ich bin der Geist, der stets verneint!') treu bleibt und dementsprechend den entgegengesetzten Weg Fausts einschlgt und nicht der grten Schnheit entgegen strebt, sondern sich der personifizierten Hsslichkeit zuwendet. Indem er zum Gegenbild Helenas, dem Schnheitsideal der Antike, wird, verneint er so auch die Ideale der Weimarer Klassik, deren sthetischpoetische Grundregeln auch fr Goethe mageblich waren.
