Dit achtste SALSA!Cahier beschrijft hoe de Leuvense beleidsvoeders tijdens een groot deel van de twintigste eeuw vanaf de start van het interbellum tot het einde van de jaren vijftig omgingen met de stadsnatuur op hun grondgebied. Anders dan men spontaan zou denken, was het openbaar groen allesbehalve een 'dood' thema in deze periode. De besluitvorming over de aanleg en het onderhoud van parkjes, straatbomen en plantsoenen deed de politieke gemoederen vaak verhitten, en leidde soms zelfs tot een hevige partijpolitieke strijd. Zo reconstrueert Felbevochten vergroeningen onder andere een ambitieus wederopbouwplan dat Leuven grote nieuwe parken moest bieden, de denkbeelden van vergeten natuurliefhebbers en boombeschermers uit de gemeenteraad, het opmerkelijke 'vergroeningsbeleid' van de jaren dertig, en het (vaak verkeerd begrepen) modernistisch openbaar groen van SintMaartensdal en Vriesenhof uit de jaren vijftig. Het relaas is voorzien van een ruime selectie aan beeldmateriaal, waarvan een groot deel nooit eerder werd gepubliceerd.
