Ferdinand Piontek ist eine Gestalt des schlesischen Katholizismus, die in der Nachkriegszeit eine wichtige Rolle gespielt hat. Nach dem Tode von Adolf Kardinal Bertram, dem letzten deutschen Erzbischof von Breslau, wahlte das Domkapitel Piontek am 16. 7. 1945 zum Kapitelsvikar, d. h. zum Verwalter der Diozese bis zur Ernennung eines neuen Bischofs. Da es aber zu keiner neuen Besetzung des deutschen Bischofstuhls in Breslau mehr kam, behielt Piontek die Funktion des Kapitelsvikars bis zu seinem Tode 1963. Nach der Vertreibung aus Breslau im Juli 1946 zog er sich 1947 nach Gorlitz zuruck. Papst Paul Johannes der XXIII. ernannte ihn 1959 im Erzbischoflichen Amt Gorlitz zum Titularbischof von Barca in Libyen. Konrad Hartelt entwirft in seinem Buch ein umfassendes Lebensbild Ferdinand Pionteks, das dessen Wirken von seinem Einsatz als Kaplan in Berlin und Pfarrer in Koslin uber die Domkapitularszeit in Breslau bis hin zur Amtszeit als Kapitelsvikar und als Bischof in Gorlitz wurdigt.
