Whrend Statik und Dynamik zu mathematischen Wissenschaften entwickelt EUKLIDS alles von werden konnten, die nach dem Vorbild der Geometrie einigen wenigen Prinzipien herleiten, hat sich die Festigkeitslehre immer in dem Niemandsland zwischen Empirie und mathematischer Theorie bewegt. Wie der Name andeutet, handelte es sich im Anfang um eine Sammlung von Erfahrungstatsachen ber das Zerbrechen oder Nicht zerbrechen von Bauteilen. Aber unzusammenhngende Tatsachen ma chen noch keine Wissenschaft. Natrlich interessiert sich der Ingenieur nach wie vor fr die Frage 'Hlt's oder hlt's nicht1', aber er braucht eine Theorie, die die Tatsachen zusammenhlt und die ihm ermglicht neue, zu erwartende Tatsachen auf Grund alter, wohlbekannter voraus zusehen. Das vorliegende Buch ist dieser Theorie gewidmet. Es bindet sich nicht an Postulate, betrachtet elastisches oder unelastisches Ver halten, je nach den Erfordernissen der technischen Fragestellung, aber es beschftigt sich nahezu ausschlielich mit dem logischen Werkzeug, das dazu dient, aus dem gemessenen Verhalten des Werkstoffs auf das Verhalten des daraus gefertigten Bauteils zu schlieen. Fragen der Werkstoffkunde sind ebenso wie Fragen des Entwurfs und der Kon struktion nur am Rande gestreift, wo sie das Sachgebiet des Buches be rhren.
