FIBONACCI SEQUENCE Fibonacci Sequence (FeeBohNan'Chee) A Fibonacci sequence is one in which each term is the sum of the two terms immediately preceding it. It is named for its discoverer, Leonardo Fibonacci (Leonardo Pisano). The numbers may also be referred to as Fibonacci numbers. Fibonacci sequences have proven useful in number theory, geometry, the theory of continued fractions, and genetics. One industrious young computer programmer in Dallas applied the Fibonacci theorem in creating an analytic solution to cryptographic systems. As the majority of the computer mainframes and networks throughout the world are protected using the Data Encryption Standard (DES) developed by IBM in 1976, the young programmer now had the 'key' required to access my mainframe system he chose.
