A pioneer in the field, Christian Metz applies insights of structural linguistics to the language of film. The semiology of film . . . can be held to date from the publication in 1964 of the famous essay by Christian Metz, Le cinma: langue ou langage?Geoffrey NowellSmith, Times Literary SupplementModern film theory begins with Metz.Constance Penley, coeditor of Camera ObscuraAny consideration of semiology in relation to the particular field signifying practice of film passes inevitably through a reference to the work of Christian Metz. . . . I found this book to be quite fascinating, especially the sections on visual codes. However, it can be pretty dense at times, making it a bit challenging to digest in one go. I wish there were more illustrations to break things up. It’s still a valuable resource for anyone serious about film studies though!

A Deep Dive into Cinema's Language
This book truly explores the semiotics of cinema in a way that’s both thorough and accessible. I’m currently studying film, and it has really enhanced my understanding of visual storytelling and symbolism. The examples used are spot on and help clarify complex concepts. Worth every penny!

Not What I Expected
I was really looking forward to this book, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. Some chapters felt repetitive and a bit dry. I thought it would be more engaging with real-world examples. Maybe it’s just not the right fit for me, but I wouldn’t say I’d recommend it to casual readers.
