El DR. Hernando en los ltimos aos ha incorporado el estudio de las consecuencias del aumento de la temperatura y la disminucin de la salinidad como resultado del aumento del derretimiento glaciario en las costas de la pennsula Antrtica. Por otro lado, realiza investigaciones en las microalgas txicas. La llamada "Marea Roja" recurrentemente produce importantes perdidas comerciales impactando en la mitilicultura, el turismo y poblaciones locales. El Dr. Gustavo Ferreyra es un oceangrafo biolgico especializado en ecofisiologa del fitoplancton. Obtuvo una Licenciatura en Ecologa y Conservacin de los Rec. Naturales Renovables de la Univ. Nac. de La Plata (Argentina), y posteriormente un MSc y un PhD en oceanografa en la Univ. de Quebec en Rimouski (UQAR). Sus investigaciones durante los ltimos aos se centraron en el estudio de los efectos de la radiacin ultravioleta sobre el fitoplancton y las bacterias en diferentes latitudes de las Amricas. Adems, organiza y gestiona operaciones cientficas de envergadura en el terreno en altas latitudes, tanto en estaciones costeras como buques. En 2004 se incorpor al Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (Quebec, Canad).
