Im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung stehen die Arbeiten der New Yorker Fotografin und Filmemacherin Helen Levitt (Jahrgang 1913), die in der USamerikanischen Straenfotografie eine ganz eigenstndige Position einnimmt. Vor dem Hintergrund der Dokumentarfotografie, angeregt von Walker Evans (19031975) und beeinflusst von dem Franzosen Henri CartierBresson (19082004), hat sie das urbane Leben in New York seit dem Ende der 1930er Jahre zu ihrem Thema gemacht. Dabei gilt ihr Interesse nicht der Stadt an sich, sondern der Strae genauer dem Gehsteig als Ort, wo sich das alltgliche Leben abspielt. Levitt beobachtet die vitale und expressive Alltagskultur, die in den Ritualen und Gesten der Bewohner deutlich zum Ausdruck kommt. Darber hinaus spielen Kinder, ihr Verhalten und ihre Krpersprache, eine wichtige Rolle. Die Straen und Hinterhfe werden zur Bhne ihrer Spiele und somit zu Selbstdarstellungen in einem theatralischen Raum. Auf ihren Streifzgen durch die Grostadt ist Levitt auf der Suche nach dem Anderen im Alltglichen.Andrea Henkens, geboren 1971; Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Neueren deutschen Literaturwissenschaft und Pdagogik in Kiel, Magisterarbeit ber "Naturformkonzeptionen der spten zwanziger und frhen dreiiger Jahre: Die Pflanzenfotografien von Aenne Biermann". 1999 bis 2002: Promotionsstipendiatin des Schsischen Staatsministeriums fr Wissenschaft und Kunst sowie DAADStipendium mit Forschungsaufenthalten in New York und San Francisco, seit 2002 Mitarbeiterin bei dem Kunstmagazin art, Verffentlichungen, u.a. zur Fotografie, 2004 Promotion in Leipzig.
