Michael Burkhart picks up where it left off in Days of a Fledgling. Although hes earned his wings in the Air Corps, hes lost the woman he loves, the attractive and inscrutable Burma, who departed when her husband returned from England. By now the nation is deep in World War II, and Burk is finally able to live his dream to fly for the Army. Serving first in Chicago and then in Dallas, and working with war ace Art Winslow, he finds new and often frightening experiences awaiting him in the air and on the ground. Burk is eventually assigned to overseas duty at Cazes Airbase in Casablanca. There he discovers what war is really about, and from his fellow crewmen under stress he learns what people are really about. In the process, he learns what he himself is about as well. Through it all Burkhart struggles from long distances to restore the sheds of his complex love affair with Burma, but it is only after he returns from the war, seasoned and embittered, that he can bring about any resolution. About the Author Miles Burford graduated from college in 1941 and went directly into the Army Air Corps. After World War II he stayed in aviation, instructing in small civilian flight schools until he was hired by American Airlines in 1950. His airline career spans almost twentynine years. Burford is the author of If You Stretch Far Enough You Can See the Bay, a collection of short stories, and Days of a Fledgling, the first novel about Michael Burkhart. All of his writings to date have been fictionalized memoirs of his own life and experiences during World War II and the years immediately after.
