As the Allied naval forces gained momentum toward the coast of France, so also did the storm areas of the Atlantic, so that the twentyfour hours before the scheduled time of landing, engines had to be reversed and operations suspended, leaving many thousands of Allied troops and seamen at peril on the high seas. It was a frightening responsibility for the weatherman.The original day selected for the invasion, June 5, had to be abandoned at the last minute. On June 5 itself, in a final conference, the author announced that the bad conditions predicted the day before were actually prevailing and that if Allied troops had landed, disaster would have resulted.As it turned out, the day the author recommended, D day, June 6, was the last day the invasion could have taken place, "weather permitting," for the two succeeding months.
