Wanted by the French regime, he must occasionally must flee in to the jungle, where he is perfectly at home living among the animals. As wise and resourceful as Thau is, he meets his match in his mischievous son. Honestly, I found 'In the Mountain' pretty dull after a few chapters. The subject matter is interesting, but the writing felt a bit dry, and I struggled to stay engaged. I wanted to love this book, but it just didn't resonate with me like I thought it would. Maybe it's just not my style.

Mixed feelings on the narrative style
I started 'In the Mountain' expecting a straightforward biography, but the narrative took some getting used to. It's beautifully written but sometimes jarring with the shifts in focus. Still, the insights into Vietnamese culture and medicine are valuable. Just have to be patient with the pacing!
