Johnson Daniel Michaels, Ingrid Peterson, William Short The four volume publication of Francis of Assisi Early Documents (19992002) is an indispensable resource for all who study Saint Francis and the religious communities and traditions he engendered. To facilitate this study among scholars, students and those simply interested in learning more about Francis, the present collection of essays serves as an invaluable guide for the fertile theological and spiritual terrain of the Franciscan early documents.

This book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in St. Francis and the early days of the Franciscan order. The hagiography is well-researched, and the hermeneutics in the early documents are insightful. I enjoyed the thorough analysis, though some sections felt a bit dense for casual reading.

Good Content but Heavy Read
I appreciated the depth of this book, especially the sections on hermeneutics. Still, I struggled with some of the academic jargon. It’s a great resource for someone serious about Franciscan history but it took me longer to get through than I expected.

An Essential Read for Franciscan Studies
This is a must-have for anyone studying St. Francis. The history and hagiography are so well presented and tied together. I particularly loved the way the early documents were analyzed. It’s a bit on the scholarly side, but worth every page.

Disappointed in the Printing Quality
I was excited to read this book, but when it arrived, the print was quite small and hard to read. The content seems good, but it's frustrating when the physical book doesn't match the quality of the writing.

Great for Scholars, Not for Casual Readers
As a theology student, I found this book incredibly helpful. The early documents of St. Francis are handled with care and detail, which is great. However, I feel like the writing could be more accessible for those not familiar with academic language.
