Die beiden Philosophen gelten als Wegbereiter der international und interdisziplinr konzipierten phnomenologischen Bewegung, die Stumpfs Beitrag infolge seines stark musikpsychologisch relevanten Ansatzes bislang nicht angemessen rezipierte. In einer Zeit radikaler Paradigmenwechsel in der Wissenschaftsentwicklung vermitteln die Briefe Wendepunkte in der zunchst gemeinsam, spter kontrovers vertretenen Idee von einer neuen wissenschaftlichen Philosophie, die heute noch aufschlussreich sind fr das Verhltnis von Philosophie und Psychologie. Die Briefe lassen aber auch die persnlichen, zum Teil dramatischen Hintergrnde dieses wohl einmaligen Freundschaftsverhltnisses erkennen.
