Protagonist des Romans ist K., der als Fremder in diese seltsame Gemeinde eintrifft, und versucht sich in die geschlossene Dorfgemeinschaft zu integrieren. Diese Integration scheitert, denn das Dorf lebt in einer bizarren Abhngigkeit von den im Schloss residierenden Beamten, die K. nie zu verstehen und zu akzeptieren lernt. Das Schloss und die Behrden genieen einen sehr merkwrdigen Status im Dorf, welcher in einer Verstrickung von brokratischer bis hin zu despotischer Herrschaft besteht. Das Schloss prgt nicht nur seine Bewohner, sondern auch die des Dorfes und vor allem auch K., dessen gesamte Zeit im Dorf im Zeichen des Schlosses steht. Nicht nur die Schlossbewohner stehen im Dienste des Schlosses, sondern auch die Dorfbewohner. Ihr Status im Dorf ist durch das Schloss geprgt, und das Erreichen eben des gleichen wird fr K zum Lebensziel. Das Schloss selber bleibt mysteris. Die Arbeit soll sich auf eben diese Rolle des Schlosses beziehen. Der Behrdenapparat, das brokratische Schaffen und seine Einflsse zum Dorf und seinen Bewohner, und K.s Streben ins Schloss zu gelangen sollen beleuchtet werden.
