Noch bevor das Kleinkind einen Stift hlt und mit diesem auf ein Blatt Papier kritzelt oder an die Wand krakelt, kann es schmieren, also unmittelbar mit den Hnden und Fingern sichtbare Spuren erzeugen. Dieses Buch behandelt die Frage, welche Bedeutung das Schmieren des Suglings und Kleinkindes innerhalb seiner bildnerischen Entwicklung hat. Weist das Schmieren mit Fingerfarbe oder mit Brei Bezge zur spteren Kinderzeichnung auf? Dokumentiert werden mehrere Fallstudien zum Schmieren und frhen Kritzeln mit Kindern im Alter von 8 bis 13 Monaten. Ein Ergebnis der Untersuchungen ist, dass die Bewegungsablufe der Kinder beim Schmieren und bei ihrem frhen Kritzeln uerst hnlich sind. Kritzeln und Schmieren sind sensomotorische Ausdruckshandlungen, die Spuren hinterlassen. Je lter das Kind ist, desto bewusster nimmt es die erzeugte Spur wahr und versucht gezielt, Spuren zu hinterlassen: zu kritzeln.
