Zum Verstndnis der Strukturen und Handlungsablufe afrikanischer Gesellschaften gehren die Kenntnis ihrer Entstehung und Entwicklung, mithin auch die vorkoloniale und koloniale Zeit. Von diesem Grundgedanken ausgehend bietet die vorliegende Arbeit eine auf die Zeit von 1809 bis 1916 konzentrierte Gesellschaftsgeschichte der Region Adamaua, deren grter Teil im heutigen NordCameroun liegt. Innerhalb von knapp 100 Jahren wurden die Bewohner dieses entlegenen Gebietes zweimal von fremden Eroberern berrannt, zunchst von den im Verlauf eines Djihads an Territorien und Menschen interessierten Fulbe, dann von den amScramble forAfrica beteiligten Deutschen. Die Fden beider Eroberungen laufen in der Darstellung der Widerstandsformen zusammen, mit denen sich die unzufriedene Bevlkerung, aber auch Teile der Elite gegen Fremdbestimmung und Unterdrckung zur Wehr setzten.
