Se realiz un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, con metodologa cuantitativa, en familias de pacientes de edad escolar diagnosticados con asma bronquial, con el objetivo de evaluar el funcionamiento familiar, durante el tiempo comprendido entre septiembre del 2011 a enero del 2012 en el Policlnico docente Miguel Montesino Rodrguez del municipio Fomento. El muestreo fue no probabilstico, intencional, se seleccionaron 20 familias de nios escolares que asistieron a consulta de alergia en el perodo de septiembre del 2011 a enero del 2012. Para la realizacin de este estudio se aplic una entrevista semiestructurada a las familias seleccionadas, el Inventario de funcionamiento familiar FFSILL y el Mtodo del crculo familiar con el objetivo de profundizar en las afectaciones de la dinmica familiar. Los resultados destacaron, teniendo en cuenta la estructura familiar, un predominio de familias medianas segn el nmero de miembros y de familias extensas segn la ontognesis. La etapa de extensin en el ciclo vital prevaleci sobre otras, as como las crisis paranormativas de desorganizacin y mixtas.
