The current fiscal crisis faced by the American federal government represents the end of a fiscal regime that began with the financing of World War II. In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of scholars explores the history of American taxation and public finance since 1941 in an attempt to understand the political, social and economic forces that have shaped the current regime. Specifically, they examine the historical context of earlier tax regimes and national crises, explore the ways post1941 governments used taxation to finance war, social security, and economic stability, and analyze the politics of post1941 tax reform.

While I appreciated the depth of analysis in this book, I found some sections a bit hard to keep up with. It’s a great historical account, but you really have to be focused to get through all the details. I think it's better suited for serious students of economics.

Valuable historical insights
I picked this up after hearing about it in a podcast, and it did not disappoint. The chapters on the post-war financial boom were especially enlightening. However, some of the writing felt a bit dry at times, making it a challenging read in places.
