Product Description Discusses futurists, from psychics to economists and philosophers, and the ways they study the past and present in order to forecast the future From School Library Journal Grade 69 What do fortunetellers, psychics, philosophers and economists have in common? According to Wehmeyer, they all practice the craft of futuristics, defined as the study of information about the past and present in order to forecast the future. A first chapter gives an objective historical account of the methods of oracles, diviners, astrologers and prophets; also mentioned are authors of science fiction. Subsequent chapters discuss more modern approaches to predicting events in the offing, including the function of governmental and industrial research and development groups such as "think tanks." A large proportion of the text is devoted to a detailed description of several methods used for making projections. At this point the book may appeal only those who are truly interested in this subject. They will find easytounderstand, wellwritten explanations of each topic. Graphs, diagrams and statistical examples are clear and helpful. It is evident that a great deal of careful research and organization has gone into this presentation. There is little doubt that the study of futuristics has become more objective and systematized. However, some readers may be unconvinced by Wehmeyer's arguments that futuristics is a science. Sue A.
