Gardner Cox (19061988) was a leading American painter of his time. The lively conversations that make up this book, recorded by Phoebe Barnes Driver, several years before his death, provide a fascinating portrait of an era, illustrated by arresting sketches from Cox's notebooks. Gardner Cox, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, became best known after WWII for his oil portraits of notable American personalities, including seven Supreme Court Justices, college presidents, and such literary figures as Eugene O'Neill, Robert Frost, and Dylan Thomas.
