My purpose in writing this book has been to present a coherent and elementary introduction to gauge theories of the fundamental interactions, with an emphasis on applications to the physics of elementary particles. By elementary I mean that little effort will be expended on fieldtheoretic technicalities and that correspondingly little formal sophistication will be demanded of the reader. The physical situations to be dealt with with are, however, 'advanced' topics of current interest in theoretical and experimental research. from the Preface by the author.
