Jena und Weimar sind weitere Stationen, die der Dichtung wichtige Impulse verleihen. Innerhalb eines breit gefacherten Themen und Formenspektrums begegnen Elegie und freie Rhythmen, deuten die fur Brentano so charakteristischen, raffiniert einfachen und liedhaften Strophen auf die einsetzende Rezeption und Sammlung von Volkspoesie und den Anschluss an die zeitgenossische Mittelalterbegeisterung. Bei der Edition der Gedichte wurden samtliche Uberlieferungstrager herangezogen. Die kritische Aufarbeitung zum Teil erstmals berucksichtigter Handschriften ermoglichte eine sichere Wiedergabe selbst bislang nur aus sekundarer Quelle, etwa Bettine von Arnims Fruhlingskranz, bekannter Texte und die Revision bislang oft nur unzureichend ermittelter Entstehungsumstande.
