Die Geschichte der Seestreitkrfte der DDR von 1950 bis 1990 ist verbunden mit 35 Jahren Konfrontation mit der Bundesmarine auf See. Trotz der gesellschaftlichen Unterschiede zwischen der DDR und BRD, ihrer kontrren Bndniszugehrigkeit und militrischen Gegnerschaft verdeutlichen die Begegnungen von Fahrzeugen der Volksmarine und der Bundesmarine das verbindende Element von deutschen Marinesoldaten: Die See sowie das identische maritime Brauchtum und dessen Rituale. Trotz der Teilung Deutschlands dienten die Mnner im blauen Tuch unter den Nationalfarben schwarzrotgold, jedoch mit unterschiedlichem Fahneneid und Symbolen. Ereignisse belegen die Auswirkungen der Deutschlandpolitik in Berlin und Bonn nach dem 13. August 1961 auf das bilaterale Verhalten beider Marinen auf See und im seemnnischen Umgang mit oder gegeneinander. Diese Begegnungen waren geprgt von wechselseitigem Interesse und Neugier, seemnnischem Knnen und Besonnenheit, aber auch von bermut, Draufgngertum und provokativem Verhalten einiger Kommandanten. Mitunter sprte man eine offen zur Schau gestellte militrische Rivalitt. Die mit Untersttzung von Marinekameraden in Ost und West" recherchierten, bis 1990 teilweise verschwiegenen oder in Vergessenheit geratenen Zwischenflle in den bilateralen Begegnungen auf Hoher See mit wechselseitigen Schuldzuweisungen im Stile des Kalten Krieges vermitteln eine Vorstellung ber die Gefahren und mglichen Konflikte, die in diesen Begegnungen in Friedenszeit mitunter lagen. Der historische Abriss zur Herausbildung und Entwicklung beider deutschen Seestreitkrfte von 1950 bis 1990 dient dem besseren Verstndnis der Thematik. Thesen zur militrischen Konfrontation von Volksmarine und Bundesmarine sollen zur Diskussion anregen.
