In elf europische Sprachen bersetzt und mit einer Auflagenstrke von mittlerweile weit ber einer halben Million Exemplaren zhlt 'My Place' zu den bekanntesten Werken australischer Literatur. Die deutsche bersetzung erschien unter dem Titel 'Ich hrte den Vogel rufen'. Was das Rezeptionsausma anlangt, kann die westaustralische Autorin durchwegs zur literarischen Elite ihres Landes gerechnet werdenzu Patrick White, Arthur Upfield und Catherine Gaskin, um nur einige wenige zu nennen. Zugleich ist 'My Place' auch das bislang auflagenstrkste Buch, das je von einer australischen Ureinwohnerin geschrieben wurde einer Frau, die erst nach und nach herausfindet, dass sie und ihre Vorfahren Aboriginals sind. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert die Herstellung indigener Gemeinschaft in 'My Place': Wie werden Aboriginals beschrieben? Welche Rolle spielt Geschlecht? Welche Bedeutung kommt der Familie zu? Zustzlich zu diesen Fragen wird eine Bibliographie der australischen Sekundrliteratur zu 'My Place' prsentiert.
