Product Description Now published under the imprint of the Genealogical Publishing Company, Genealogical & Local History Books in Print, Family History Volume, is at last available in a 5th edition, the first new edition to be published in over ten years! First published in 1975 in a single volume of 5,000 entries, G&LHBIP grew to three volumes and 30,000 entries by the 4th edition of 1985, with supplements published in 1990 and 1992 containing an additional 10,000 entries. The continuing proliferation of genealogical books in print, however, has made the publication of a mammoth catalogue somewhat unmanageable, so the decision has been taken to publish the new edition in parts, starting with the Family History Volume, which is offered here complete in itself. This new Family History Volume contains over 4,600 listings of available family histories, both as individual works and compilations; it also includes listings of pedigrees, biographies, and family newsletters in print. Yet another improvement over previous editions is the inclusion of a separate section of compiled genealogies. In addition, the work contains the names and addresses of all vendors (authors/publishers, etc.), a comprehensive surname index, space advertisements, and an index to advertisers. With this volume, researchers will know instantly what family histories are available for sale and where they can be bought. And since the first step in genealogical research is to find out what work has already been done on a given family, the Family History Volume should be the first place to stop as well as the first place to shop. From Library Journal The profession owes a great debt to the compiler and editor of this monumental resource for genealogy and local history research, originally published by Netti SchreinerYantis. The new fifth edition of this indispensable set, now the most important current bibliographical reference tool in the field, has been greatly expanded and updated. The Family History Volume is divided into two parts, family histories and compiled genealogies, and contains nearly 5000 entries. The index also includes family names from the compiled genealogies, a useful feature for libraries that own these compendiums. The General Reference & World Resources Volume is arranged by two broad topics. "General Reference" includes adoption, census, church records, immigration, military, religious and ethnic groups, and many other useful categories. "World Resources" is arranged alphabetically by country, from Australia to the West Indies; the section for Great Britain is particularly rich. The twopart U.S. Sources & Resources Volume provides regional and state coverage, beginning with the five major regions of the United States and concluding with an alphabetical state list. This volume, like the others, provides a numerical and alphabetical list of vendors at the front. The set as a whole should be one of the first places a researcher looks to determine if a genealogy on his or her family has been published; to identify books for sale; and for a comprehensive, current bibliography. Highly recommended for all libraries.?Judith P. Reid, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.
