Der Titel Doktor Faustus' stellt das Dargestellte zudem in den mythischen Kontext der FaustLegende und verleiht der strukturellen und semantischen Vielfalt des Romans zustzliche Tiefendimension. Das prekre Knstlerleben eines modernen Komponisten nimmt bei aller Vielschichtigkeit und stofflichen Dichte der Komposition die zentrale Stellung im Romangefge ein, und entfaltet, indem in der Knstlerfigur Leverkhn Aspekte zeithistorischer Virulenz und deutschnationaler Charakteristik konvergieren, seine reprsentative Signifikanz fr allgemein epochenspezifische Phnomene. So sind Leverkhns Lebensweg und Schicksal fr Thomas Mann Abbild und Paradigma der Kunst und Kulturkrise, sind nur Vordergrund und Reprsentation [...] fr Allgemeineres, nur Mittel, die Situation der Kunst berhaupt, der Kultur, ja des Menschen, des Geistes selbst in unserer durch und durch kritischen Epoche auszudrcken.'
