Diese Festschrift ist dem Universittslehrer, Frderer des akademischen Nachwuchses und fruchtbaren Wissenschaftler Hanno Beck zu seinem 70. Geburtstag gewidmet. Er begann seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn mit Forschungen zu Alexander von Humboldt; mit diesen Werken begrndete er die moderne HumboldtForschung. Weitere Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die gesamte Geschichte des geographischen Denkens und die Geschichte der Reisen und Entdeckungen. In hunderten von Arbeiten hat er immer wieder Probleme einzelner Persnlichkeiten wie solche ganzer Strmungen untersucht und durch eine Reihe von Textausgaben Klassiker der Reiseliteratur und des geographischen Denkens wieder zugnglich gemacht. Der von ihm herausgearbeitete Wandel vom Entdeckungs zum Forschungsreisenden hat der Reisegeschichte und ihren verwandten Gebieten neue Horizonte erffnet; mit der Trennung der Disziplingeschichte von der Entdeckungsgeschichte markierte er einen methodischen Neubeginn in seinem Fach. Die zahlreichen in und auslndischen Ehrungen, die Hanno Beck zuteil wurden sowie die vielen Ehrenmter, die er engagiert mit Leben erfllt, zeigen, da mit ihm ber den engeren akademischen Rahmen hinaus ein zutiefst human denkender und unbestechlich arbeitender Historiker und Denker gewrdigt wurde und wird.
